Nebraska football vs the MAC

The Nebraska football team doesn’t have the history against the MAC that some might expect. In fact, they really haven’t played teams from the conference that much at all. When they have played them, they’ve mostly logged wins, but there are only four teams from the conference that the Huskers are actually undefeated against.

That a lot of the teams are relatively new to FBS is one reason. That the Cornhuskers just never felt the need to put one of these teams on their schedule is another.

Western Michigan: The Western Michigan Broncos came to Lincoln exactly one time in the two schools’ history and were actually not the pushover Nebraska football fans thought they would be. The 47-24 NU victory was certainly not one that had fans scared, but the 2008 matchup was definitely the beginning of the “this isn’t the same old dominant Nebraska program” type of game.

Buffalo: The most recent matchup of any of the teams in the MAC, Buffalo and the Huskers met up for the first time ever in September of 2021. The 28-3 win for Scott Frost’s boys was supposed to be a sign that they were finally turning the corner. It very much was not.

Akron: Lots of people had the Akron Zips pegged as the first win of the Scott Frost era. But a storm packed with all kinds of lightning made sure the two teams didn’t face off in the new coach’s debut. That means that the only time the Huskers faced off was a 1997 game in which Big Red won, 59-14.

Ball State: Perhaps the most memorable team on this entire list, considering that the Cardinals were two points away from avoiding it entirely. When they came to Lincoln in 2007, Ball State was officially the beginning of the end of the Bill Callahan era when they nearly pulled off what would have been the biggest upset in Memorial Stadium’s modern history at the time. Instead, Nebraska football held on for a 41-40 win in a game where no one played defense.
