The Nebraska football team has had one heck of a run in recruiting and that includes in-state players, but one might be about to leave.

The Huskers have been having the kind of run the team’s fans have been dreaming on for years. That is especially the case when it comes to in-state players. However it looks like there is one of the best in-state players around that could be slipping right through Matt Rhule’s fingers.

One of the most interesting things about Caleb Pyfrom looking like he’s headed elsewhere is that it’s not as though the Huskers didn’t try pretty damn hard to reel him in. And that wasn’t just the fact that they were the first FBS offer to Pyfrom.

When the Omaha Central offensive lineman announces his commitment on Thursday morning at 10 am, it’s almost a given that he’s picking the Illinois Fighting Illini.

It’s not just that Pyfrom seemed to really enjoy his visit to Illinois this past weekend. And he definitely enjoyed it. He talked to 247Sports about the trip, and it sounded an awful lot like he’d already decided to go to Illinois and was just scoping out his new home.

"“It was cool. I liked it. I got to know a lot of the players and a lot of the staff. It was a pretty good visit. …I wanted to get out there and see what their program was about and learn more about them.”"

Nebraska football about to lose Caleb Pyfrom?

It’s also not that Pyfrom is announcing just a few days after he checked out what Illinois had to offer. The real reason Nebraska football seems to be losing this battle is because of where the offensive lineman was this weekend.

It’s no coincidence that damn near every recruit that was in Lincoln this weekend is now a Husker. The one that isn’t, Carter Nelson, is expected to be one by noon today. While Nelson is indeed expected to be the 21st commit to the Nebraska football program’s 2024 class, it doesn’t appear that Caleb Pyfrom will be the 22nd.
