Deion Sanders has put those who are doubting his program on notice. That would seem to include Nebraska football fans counting Colorado as a win.

Obviously, the most highly anticipated game of the Matt Rhule era is going to be Nebraska football’s season opener against Minnesota. Not only is it the first game of his Husker career, but its also a conference game. It would be nice if he could start his run in Lincoln with a winning conference record.

The second most anticipated game of the 2023 season for most Husker fans is also actually the second game of the season against the Colorado Buffaloes. Part of the rationale for the excitement is that Nebraska football and CU were longtime rivals before the two schools went their separate ways. There’s also the little detail about the Huskers losing to Colorado twice the last time the rivalry was rejoined. And then there’s the overwhelming desire to just beat the snot out of a team run by Deion Sanders.

Coach Prime seems to understand that teams are going to be gunning for his squad this year. But he’s got a bit of a warning about that. He wants people to understand the Buffs aren’t going to be as bad as prognosticators have predicted.

“I don’t know. I can’t give you that,” Sanders answered when he was asked at a recent event about how many wins to expect in 2023. “We’re going to exceed their expectations; we’re going to exceed their expectations.”

"“And I guarantee you when you play against us, you’re going to know you played against us. You’re going to know that, you’re going to feel it. I cannot wait till you see.”"

Nebraska football on notice

Consider Husker fans warned. Deion has never suffered from a lack of confidence. So it’s not surprising that he thinks his team will be better than the experts believe.

One thing is clear. The Nebraska football team will go into Boulder taking the Buffs lightly at their peril. All they need to do is watch what happened in the second half of both contests the last two times they took on their old Big 8 rival.
