The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team came into a must-win weekend series and thanks to Jace Kaminska, clinched at least the series.
The Nebraska baseball team entered the weekend series against the Penn State Nittany Lions knowing that they needed to take care of business. On Friday night, they definitely did that, winning the series opener 19-5.
On Saturday evening, the Huskers made sure to really take care of business in a big way. Thanks in no small part to Jace Kaminska, the Nebraska Cornhuskers showed that they don’t need to score 19 runs in order to beat back the Nittany Lions.
The Wichita State transfer has had a bit of an up-and-down season, but he managed to step up when it mattered most on Saturday night. Kaminska went seven innings, allowed just two runs and struck out seven.
He pitched well enough that he and Schay Schanaman were able to make five runs scored by a Husker offense that wasn’t quite as sharp stand up in a 5-2 victory. That win means that the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team is at least going to win the series against PSU.
That also means that the Huskers are in a position of strength heading into Sunday and the final four games of the regular season. It also helped Will Bolt’s squad jump from 5th to 6th in the Big Ten.
That’s especially important considering that the Top 8 teams in the conference make the postseason tournament. There’s even a chance that the Nebraska Cornhuskers still could jump into first place if everything went right.
Even if “everything” doesn’t go right, Will Bolt has a team that looked like it was in disarray as recently as Wednesday night into a squad that has dispatched its conference opponent in solid form.
Now the Nebraska Cornhuskers will enter Sunday hoping for the sweep and to put real concerns about missing the Big Ten Tournament in the rearview mirror.
