Nebraska football star quarterback Casey Thompson is wasting no time in trying to find his new school as he’s visiting Auburn on Sunday.

Many Nebraska football fans are still coming to grips with the idea that Thompson isn’t going to be battling to be starting quarterback this fall. More than a few people wanted to see him go toe-to-toe with Jeff Sims and let the best man win.

For his part, Thompson hasn’t really shed light on why he decided it was in his best interests to leave the Huskers instead. But on Sunday, that he’s left will get “real” as he’ll officially start visiting other schools. First up on the list is the Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers.

On3 first reported that Thompson was headed to the SEC school “sometime this weekend.” The site later clarified it would be Sunday. That means the Tigers are going to be hosting one of the most experienced and arguably best quarterback currently in the portal.

It makes some sense that Thompson would give Freeze’s Tigers a look. When the now-Auburn coach was at Liberty, the Flames had one of the more potent offenses in college football. For a quarterback with one more shot to make his case for the NFL, that has to be attractive.

Former Nebraska football star looking toward the SEC

While I initially thought that Thompson would be good to his word and come back to fight for the Huskers’ starting job, it makes sense that he’d want out of Lincoln. The Huskers spring game showed a Matt Rhule offense that is going to focus more on quarterback run plays.

While Thompson can, he’s far more of a pocket passer than Sims. After getting thoroughly beat up last season, he might want to go somewhere where he’ll take a few less hits.

While the former Nebraska football star is starting his visits, it’s not clear how many he’ll take. The process could be quick, though Thompson would be best suited if he checked out all his options.
