Some Nebraska Football fans worried about one potential portal entry above all
Nebraska football fans are counting down to April 30 and hoping they don’t see an announcement regarding Casey Thompson before then.
It’s natural to worry. We’re in a new age of college football. An age when players come and go at the seeming drop of a hat. And Casey Thompson has already transferred once in his college career.
That’s why the further we get from the Nebraska football spring game, and the closer we get to the April 30 deadline for players to enter the transfer portal, Huskers fans are getting more nervous. What if the rug gets pulled out from under us?
Such is the psyche of a fan base that hasn’t had much good happen to it lately. Quite a few of us are living by the adage “expect the worst and you won’t be surprised when it happens.” And so, despite the fact that Thompson has made it clear he’s coming back for the 2023 season, there is a sizable portion of the fan base that will be chewing their fingernails and waiting for bad news right up until the deadline has come, and gone.
The worry is so great that even when Thompson posts a couple of videos that should fill Nebraska football fans with hope, some take it and run the other way. The quarterback – who was extremely limited in what he was allowed to do during spring practice as he recovers from offseason surgery – posted a couple of videos on social media showing him throwing.
Thompson also posted quite a few quick vids to his Instagram stories. And the prevailing theory appears to be that the might be doing all this to show other schools what he has to offer. In several different Nebraska football message boards, there were some who think he’s basically gone.
“It appears he posted 30 plus videos late last night on his instagram account showing him throw every kind of pass,” one user wrote. “This is a film dump for the portal, I’m afraid”
“I agree…he gone! Get the videos out there that you are healthy and tossing domes,” another wrote. “Have dad work the power 5 teams with needs that will predominately throw the ball. Line up the next school and announce you are entering the portal.”
Is Nebraska football keeping Casey Thompson?
It’s worth pointing out that it doesn’t feel like posting videos that go away after 24 hours is the best way to get colleges to look at your film. So far he hasn’t put up any video that’s been there longer than that.
It is possible that Casey Thompson could have seen what Jeff Sims did in the spring game and decided the supposed quarterback battle this fall will be steered in one direction. But it’s also possible (and quite frankly feels more likely) that Thompson is going to honor his word, stick, and fight.
The good news is that Nebraska football fans won’t have to wait long to find out. What he plans to do will be known by the end of the weekend.
