The Nebraska football team is seeing a trickling of players entering the transfer portal with former Hastings walk-on Jarrett Synek making the move Monday.

There’s been a lot of talk about how the Nebraska football team is going to have to prune its roster a bit toward the end of spring practice. It was thought that when the transfer portal opened on Saturday, that would be the best way to go about getting the team’s scholarship numbers down. It also felt as though things were starting to roll a bit when Alante Brown announced he’d officially entered the portal. However, While Jarrett Synek has followed Brown to the portal, his departure doesn’t do much for the roster crunch.

That’s because the former Hastings high school quarterback was a walk-on. That is despite the fact that he did move his way up the depth chart toward the end of the 2022 season. Synek even managed to get himself into the game against Michigan, where he led the Huskers’ final drive.

While he doesn’t help with the roster numbers, Synek’s departure does help with the crunch in the quarterback room. His announcement on Monday night that he was entering the portal was not a surprise as he hadn’t been with the team this spring.

In the post announcing the move, he thanked his family and friends for their unwavering support. He also thanked his former coaches.

It shouldn’t be a huge surprise, but it was still striking that new Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule wasn’t named in his thank yous and farewells. Neither was anyone else on Rhule’s staff. That would undoubtedly point to Synek’s departure being a foregone conclusion for a little while now.

Just what will happen with Synek now is anyone’s guess. It seems likely that if the former Nebraska football player is looking to get a chance to start somewhere else, an FCS school might be his best option.
