Nebraska Cornhuskers new: Baseball rolls into first, Nick Janowski is ‘N’, more

Nebraska baseball swept its way to first place in the Big Ten. Basketball got its first 2024 commit. That and more in today’s Nebraska Cornhuskers news.

The Nebraska baseball team stood up and made a statement over the weekend series with the Northwestern Wildcats in a way that the Nebraska Cornhuskers very badly needed to do. After some midweek games that might have taken them out of the running for an at-large big, the Huskers need to win as many Big Ten games as possible.

It turns out that they won so many this weekend that they’ve rolled into first place in the conference. More than that, the Nebraska Cornhuskers look like the team to beat after upending Northwestern 8-3, 9-2 and finally 18-5 on Sunday. Will Bolt’s boys are now 7-2 in conference and are just ahead of the teams that are running to try and catch up.

Winning games is especially going to be key because of the Big Ten’s unbalanced schedule and the quirk of college baseball schedules. The Indiana Hoosiers are currently in second place and somehow, those two teams won’t face off in the regular season.

Next up for Nebraska baseball is a mid-week game against Creighton and then a 3-game set with an Iowa squad that is still good enough to make some serious noise. So far, the Huskers have yet to lose a series in the B1G.

Nebraska basketball lands first 2024 commit

While Fred Hoiberg is working hard to reshape his roster after his first .500 season with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, he’s also building for the future. That future looks a little brighter today thanks to the commitment of Nick Janowski.

The 4-star shooting guard committed to the Huskers over a long list of schools that were hoping they could land his services, including Wisconsin, Marquette, Iowa State, Iowa, USC, Georgia Tech, and Virginia Tech.

Janowski averaged 23.7 points and 6.6 rebounds this season, shooting 55% from the field and 41.6% from the 3-point range.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

  • Nebraska baseball isn’t the only squad that pulled off a sweep this weekend. The softball team managed to sweep Indiana this past weekend, 12-2, 8-6, and 4-2. That means the squad is now 30-13 and 10-4 in the conference.
  • Former Nebraska basketball assistant Armon Gates is on the move again. Having spent the last few seasons with Oregon, he’s now taken a job with the Oklahoma Sooners. The move hasn’t been officially announced but he did change his Twitter profile to reflect the new job.
  • When it comes to next Saturday’s spring game, Sam McKewon says that the positions fans should be looking at the closest are quarterback, kicker and receiver.
  • Thanks to the landing of transfer power forward Rien Mast, it appears the Huskers are no longer in the running for one Pittsburgh player in the portal. John Hugely has canceled his visit to Lincoln. That of course, does not preclude the Nebraska Cornhuskers going after another big man as they still have some space on the roster.
