Just because Adrian Martinez finished his career as something other than a member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers doesn’t mean that Nebraska football fans can’t claim him as one of their own when he does something newsworthy. “Once a Husker, always a Husker,” after all.

As SI.com points out when former Nebraska Cornhuskers star Adrian Martinez takes the field as the starting quarterback for the USFL’s New Jersey Generals, he’ll join a relatively short list of former Huskers to play quarterback for a professional football team.

On April 15 at 6:30 p.m. CDT he’ll be the first former Nebraska Cornhuskers star to take the field for a professional football team (that isn’t an Indoor Football League team) in decades. Of course, when becomes the New Jersey Generals’ field general, he’ll also be playing for a former Nebraska football head coach.

That might be the weirdest thing of all. Scott Frost’s anointed starter for all four years he was here in Nebraska will be starting in the USFL for the man Frost replaced. That’s worth a watch all its own.
