While there was mostly a sense of excitement and positivity around the start of Nebraska football’s spring practice, there was also a couple of jarring announcements on Monday morning. Right at the top of the list of those announcements was that Anthony Grant wasn’t practicing with the team and had been suspended.

Rhule addressed the Nebraska football team’s moves just ahead of the first spring practice and made it clear that Anthony Grant’s suspension is due to “off field” issues like academics. While not being specific about just what kind of other issues might have been at play, it’s certainly an interesting way to start the spring.

Those worried that the Nebraska football team might already be down a running back should be able to rest easy. From Rhule’s demeanor and his words, it doesn’t appear as though he expects the Grant situation to drag on all that long.

He stated that while the leading rusher from a year ago being away from the team is not Grant’s choice, he does have quite a bit of control on when he can return. Rhule said that the back is away form the team “until such time” as he gets things sorted out.

Grant isn’t the only Nebraska football player who was not allowed to participate in the Huskers’ first practice of the spring. Rhule mentioned that defensive back/ wide receiver Tommi Hill  is suspended as well.

The Huskers’ coach did not go into detail as to why Hill is sitting out and that could mean that things are a bit bleaker in regards to his return. He also announced that tight end Chris Hickman and defensive back Tyreke Johnson had left the team.

Anthony Grant’s suspension means that things are already getting interesting. Ajay Allen came into the spring as a player to watch. Now it looks like both he and Gabe Ervins are going to get the opportunity to seize the bull by the horns.
