Nebraska football recruiting efforts are going back into Texas. This time, Matt Rhule and company are looking at a defensive back who has been somewhat under the radar, but he might not be for much longer.

William “Speedy” Nettles doesn’t have a ton of offers just yet, but the ones he does have, especially now that Nebraska football recruiting has come calling are fairly impressive. While at the moment, there isn’t a consensus on him by the recruiting services, On3 has rated him as a 3-star prospect.

The Huskers are the latest offer for Nettles but he already boasts six Power Five programs who have come calling. Despite that, the defensive back is said to have the only non P5 program that’s offered, in SMU as the current front runner.

His interest in the Mustangs seem to be two fold. There’s the fact that they were the first team to give him an official offer. There’s also the fact that he hails from Dallas, Texas.

SMU has certainly been good enough in recent years to be attractive to prospects that might want to stick closer to home.

After years and years of being one of the worst programs in college football, SMU went 7-6 last season and took on the BYU Cougars in the New Mexico Bowl, losing by a single point. That kind of success obviously makes the school a contender for William Nettles even if Nebraska football recruiting has an interest in him.

The Huskers are finding themselves once again fighting for a recruit with the likes of USC. The Trojans are going after Nettles as well. It feels unusual to be squaring off against a Pac 12 team as much as Nebraska has done recently, though it’s worth pointing out USC will very soon be a Big 10 team.

Now that Nebraska football recruiting efforts have zeroed in on the 3-star defensive back, it will be interesting to see if they can pull William Nettles away from USC, SMU and the others.
