Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Baseball wins a big one, basketball suffers setback, more

It’s hard to overstate how important yesterday’s Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball win was for Will Bolt and his program. The victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores was one that can propel a team forward in a season that started off about as poorly as possible.

The Nebraska baseball team beat Vanderbilt 5-3 on Friday and, in doing so, showed that the Huskers can hang with the best teams in the country (even if its only one day) and showed that even when down 3-1 late in the game, Bolt’s bunch are not quitting. Perhaps the even better news is that this was not a perfectly played game. There’s still room for improvement.

The Huskers trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning and managed to score two in order to tie it. They then scored two in the bottom of the 8th to take the lead.

There was one other big leap forward for the Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team that could be a sign that Bolt is getting his team turned around. After a weekend against San Diego where the bullpen was almost as big a problem as the offense with RISP, it appears the Huskers are trending in the right direction there too.

In fact, since San Diego, the pen (Shay Schanaman especially) has been dominant. Nebraska baseball relievers are currently on a 19.1 inning streak without allowing a run. That level of dominance obviously won’t continue, but if the Huskers can have a solid pen all year, 2023 could be a big one.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

While the Nebraska baseball team’s season is looking up, the Nebraska basketball team’s end of the year took another hit. It appears that in tomorrow’s contest against Iowa, the Huskers will be without both Wilhelm Breidenbach and Blaise Keita.

There was also bad news for a former Nebraska Cornhuskers star in Isaiah Roby. Roby was released by the San Antonio Spurs on Friday. It will be interesting to see if and when another NBA team gives him a shot.

As we get closer to spring practices starting and winter conditioning wrapping up, we’ll hear from a couple members of the Nebraska football team. Thomas Fidone and Florida transfer Chief Borders are going to address the media on Monday, alongside head coach Matt Rhule.

More good news for Nebraska baseball. Catcher Josh Caron has officially been named to the Buster Posey Award Watch List. Caron is hitting .353 this season and already has more homers (3) and RBI (8) than he had in 26 games a year ago.
