Nebraska Cornhuskers News: Tim Miles success, baseball’s big win, more
The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team had a rough start to the season, but it looks like it might be finding its footing. After an opening series that saw them start 0-3-1 against San Diego and then a shaky win against South Alabama on Friday, there were some Husker fans wondering if Will Bolt’s team might see a repeat of the 2022 season.
Then Saturday arrived.
After struggling on offense for most of the early part of the schedule, it appears that the Huskers took their frustration out on the Jaguars on Saturday. Led by Brice Matthews and Dylan Carey, the Cornhuskers won their second straight, 15-4.
Now Will Bolt’s boys will go for the sweep on Sunday afternoon. Should they win, they’d see their record improve to 3-3-1 and they’d get a bit of a reset. After the rough start, it’s a safe bet that Bolt will absolutely take a .500 record after two series with plenty more of the season to go.
Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news
- The baseball team wasn’t the only Husker team to get a big win on Saturday. The Nebraska basketball team beat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 78-67. The win improved Fred Hoiberg’s squad to 15-14 on the season. That is rather obviously the latest the Huskers have been over .500 in the season during Hoiberg’s reign. It also puts the Nebraska Cornhuskers squarely on the bubble, even if they are still a huge longshot.
- The softball team also had a fantastic Saturday after struggling in the middle part of their early schedule. Following a no-hitter thrown by Sarah Harness on Friday, the softball team won a double-head on Saturday over CSU Bakersfield and New Mexico by a combined score of 25-1.
- Former Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball coach Tim Miles is once again building up a mid major into something bigger. He’s taken over a historically moribund San Jose State program and made them a tough out. On Saturday, they beat Boise State in overtime to improve to 17-12. That win kicked off an automatic contract incentive that could keep Miles in San Jose through the 2028 season.
Big Ten Basketball news
- The Nebraska Cornhuskers weren’t the only Big Ten team to log a big win on Saturday. Iowa had the biggest comeback in school history, and perhaps conference history when they rallied from 14 down with just over a minute and a half to play against Michigan State. They ended up winning in overtime, 112-106. However, Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffery stole the show with his ridiculous stare down of a ref during the game. The coach is well known for antics, but this one should have been met with some more punishment.
- The other game of note on Saturday in the Big Ten was Purdue’s 79-71 loss to Indiana. The Boilermakers are playing poorly at exactly the wrong time of the season. They’ve now lost four of their last six. They’ve also been swept by the rival Hoosiers.
Big Ten Baseball news
- While Nebraska Cornhuskers fans were celebrating their big win over South Alabama, Iowa fans got some big bragging rights on Saturday. The Hawkeyes toppled top ranked LSU, 12-4.
- The rest of the Big Ten had a rough day highlighted by losses like Northwestern’s defeat to Presbyterian and Michigan State losing to Gardner Webb
