Nebraska Cornhuskers Baseball: 3 things of note after series sweep of South Alabama
The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team has to be feeling quite a bit better about their early season after this past weekend. Last week, the Huskers couldn’t figure out a way to get a win. This weekend, they shook off an up-and-down game on Friday and then dominated on Saturday and Sunday to get the sweep against the South Alabama Jaguars.
Not only did the Huskers manage to get to .500 at 3-3-1 and they were able to wipe away the bad taste of a series against San Diego where nothing seemed to go right. In the sweep of the Jags, who won 31 games a year ago and came into the weekend 4-1, the Nebraska baseball team looks like they’re ready to start showing that head coach Will Bolt has righted the ship.
Nebraska Cornhuskers Baseball broke out of its offensive slump
After the series against the Torreros, Will Bolt made it clear he was incredibly unhappy about his offense especially. There was a small village left on the basepaths in that series and their batting average with RISP was abysmal.
Against South Alabama, the Huskers offense wasn’t perfect, but it was much, much, much better. The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team had some struggles on Friday but still eked out a win. Then on Saturday they scored 15 and on Sunday scored 9. Offense was a problem a year ago so it was nice to see the bats generating runs rather than just hits this weekend.
Does Nebraska baseball have an ace type?
The Huskers offense made it so the pitching staff didn’t have to dominate, but if there is something to worry about a bit in the early going, it’s still the fact that none of NU’s top three pitchers have turned in a performance that could be described as dominant.
Saturday starter Jace Kaminska had the best outing of the trio, but he’s still sporting a 4.91 earned run average so far this season. Caleb Clark’s Sunday start against South Alabama was simply not good and despite being staked to a 6-1 lead, he couldn’t go longer than three innings.
Is the power real?
I’m just going to keep mentioning that the Nebraska baseball team’s offense was not all that good a year ago. Because it’s something that absolutely needs to be improved in order to compete for the postseason this year. So far, so good.
The Huskers slugged just .400 a year ago as a team. Coming into today they were already at .474 despite last weekend’s issues scoring runs. On Sunday, they collected 13 hits, including four home runs and three doubles. On the season the Nebraska baseball team now has 11 home runs in seven games. Last year, they had just 51 homers in 53 games.
Next up for Nebraska baseball
The Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team will get to show which team they really are after basically being swept last week and getting the sweep this weekend. Starting next Friday, the Huskers will travel to play in the Cambria College Classic against Vanderbilt, Hawaii and fourth-ranked Ole Miss.
