On Tuesday afternoon, one of the weirder confluences of Nebraska Cornhuskers’ history came to pass. When the New Jersey Generals took part in the USFL draft, the team apparently decided they needed a franchise-level quarterback.

The quarterback they landed on was none other than former Nebraska football and Kansas State quarterback Adrian Martinez. The pick is actually an interesting one because while Martinez doesn’t look like someone who is ever going to be a game-changer in the NFL, he could be a difference-maker in a lower professional football level like the USFL.

And the weirdness and confluence of the pick is that another former member of the Nebraska Cornhuskers leads the New Jersey Generals. The Generals are coached by none other than Mike Riley.

While he’s well known in Lincoln as the coach that was run out of town on a rail, it’s interesting to think about the fact that Riley’s team just drafted the quarterback who was once anointed as the man who was going to fix the mess that Riley and his schemes made. It will be interesting to see how the two mesh and whether they mesh in the new league.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers news

  • While the transfer portal and NIL have transformed the college sports world, John Cook is one that hopes he can still build the Nebraska Cornhuskers volleyball the way he wants to do it. Cook is one of those who believes that loyalty and building up is still the way to move forward and it will certainly be interesting to see if his approach really starts clashing with the rest of the volleyball world. It’s worth pointing out that Texas won the title with a ton of transfers last year.
  • The Nebraska basketball team has been quite resurgent in the latter part of this season, even battling back to .500 and posting the most wins of the Fred Hoiberg era by a large margin. As Kaleb Henry wrote, one of the more exciting aspects of this season is the “meme army” that has risen after the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ latest victories.
