The Houston Cougars might be the kings of the NCAA basketball hill for the moment, but it seems unlikely they’ll be there very long at all.

While the Cougars are right at the top of the rankings thanks to a 25-2 record and some of the NCAA basketball world’s top teams struggling a bit, it feels like their stance on the top of the heap will be shortlived mainly because those other big teams are going to be taking charge of their own destiny.

The Houston Cougars might be a very good team. They are likely a team that will compete for the Elite Eight and maybe even the final four once March Madness is in full swing. However, it doesn’t feel like the AAC team is one that is going to have the top overall spot when the brackets are released.

Why Houston Cougars won’t be atop the NCAA basketball rankings long

The Cougars have won seven straight games to carry themselves back to the top of the rankings. In the process they leaped over the Alabama Crimson Tide. That is just one of the reasons why it feels like Houston’s hold is tenous.

The Alabama Crimson Tide has a couple of games against unranked but competent teams this week. Should they go 2-0, it seems unlikely that the Houston Cougars are going to hold onto that top spot.

The AAC school is unlikely to lose anytime soon, unless they get upset, but it also doesn’t seem like any wins they rack up are going to be all that impressive.

The Kansas Jayhawks are also on quite a run and are hard charging up the polls. Like Alabama, they are playing two competent, but unranked teams and a 2-0 week could see them leap into the top spot, should Alabama falter and especially if the Houston Cougars drop a game unexpectedly.
