Nebraska football recruiting efforts could pay off for the first time in the 2024 class with the pending announcement of Marcus Goree Jr.

Matt Rhule and company had quite the 2023 recruiting haul despite getting a very late start. The Nebraska football recruiting team could finally see some tangible success in the 2024 cycle. However much of a longshot it might be.

Marcus Goree Jr. announced on Thursday that he was announcing his commitment on Saturday night as part of an NIL reception that is going to be broadcast on SuperMax100. In the same tweet where the 3-star athlete said he was going to be announcing his commitment, he let it slip what five schools he would be picking between.

Nebraska football recruiting has been getting quite a bit of attention for its pursuit of some high profile prospects like Dylan Raiola but it’s also been going after a few guys that might be under the radar like Goree. Granted, this “under the radar” prospect is getting recruited by some of the top schools in the country.

The 40th ranked athlete in the 2024 class, according to On3 hails from Cleveland, Tennessee and the Volunteers are thought to be the most likely landing spot for Goree. However, the Nebraska football team, Michigan State, Colorado and Michigan are also in the running.

The likelihood of Marcus Goree Jr. committing to the Huskers seems small if there’s any really chance at all. He was originally being recruited by Bryan Applewhite, who of course is not longer a part of the Cornhuskers coaching staff.

One interesting tidbit about this particular 3-star prospect is that his recruitment is yet another showdown between Matt Rhule and Deion Sanders. The Nebraska football recruiting efforts have become entangled with the Buffaloes for a number of different prospects in the 2023 and 2024 class.

The Buffs have even been trying to make inroads with more than a few in-state prospects that Rhule is expected to lock down. To that end, it would seem that Nebraska football recruiting followers might be rooting for Tennessee to win out, if the Huskers aren’t the favorite.
