Nebraska football recruiting efforts ran into one heck of an adversary in its pursuits for Ainsworth’s Carter Nelson now that Alabama has offered him.

The good news here, is that when it comes to Carter Nelson, Nebraska football recruiting has had to face off against some of the best teams in the country already. Still, when the Alabama Crimson Tide come calling for an eight-man football player, it’s going to cause waves.

When Nelson announced on Twitter that the Tide had given him an official offer, it didn’t take long for Nebraska football twitter to start really ramping up. There were plenty of people who wished him luck and more than a few who were quite impressed with Nick Saban coming calling.

In all, the reactions to this offer show what Matt Rhule and company are up against when trying to reel in Carter Nelson.

The good news is, Nebraska football recruiting efforts have been good enough that experts still see the Huskers as the favorites to land the Ainsworth tight end. The bad news is that it’s clear that other teams believe he’s someone who is poachable.

Nelson isn’t the first in-state target that’s gotten a ton of attention from schools all over the country. In fact, Rhule was able to find off all comers regarding Malachi Coleman this past recruiting cycle. The Lincoln East prospect had offers from Colorado and Georgia among many others.

It’s clear that Coleman listened to those offers but eventually chose Nebraska football when the time came to sign on the dotted line. The question is whether Rhule can repeat that magic in the 2024 recruiting class.

Nelson clearly has a special place in his heart for Nebraska football. But he’s also definitely planning visits to other Power 5 programs like Notre Dame. If Rhule can find a way to keep the Ainsworth prospect home, it would be another big Nebraska football recruiting win in the short time that he’s been the head coach.
