The NCAA basketball rankings for February 5 are out and there are more than a couple decisions that stand out as a bit baffling.

There are bound to be some people who don’t believe that Purdue deserves to be at the top of the rankings. However, when it comes to NCAA basketball, the Boilermakers are clearly the cream of the crop.

Where there are some voter choices that certainly beg questions and might be a bit baffling near the top of the rankings, its the teams at the bottom that are truly surprising. Though it’s more that teams like North Carolina State are jumping into the rankings after being quite a ways out just the week before. The Wolfpack are actually just one of the teams that finds themselves in the Top 25 in a big way.

It appears this week’s rankings saw them jump 10 whole spots and enter the Top 25 at Number 22. The weirdest part of that particular jump is that it’s not as though North Carolina State posted some big impressive wins.

The Wolfpack had wins over Florida State and Georgia Tech. Neither of those wins seem like they should be ones that are so impressive they should be rocketing a team into the rankings.

The other surprising jump in the rankings is the Rutgers Scarlet Knights who apparently lept 11 spots in the Top 25, to Number 24. While there is definitely an argument to be made that the Scarlet Knights do deserve to be ranked, their performance last week probably shouldn’t be looked at as the deciding factor.

Rutgers posted less than impressive victories over Big Ten cellar dweller Minnesota and a decent but not outstanding Michigan State squad. It will certainly be interesting to see what happens if Rutgers gets some more wins this week and see if they keep climbing up the NCAA basketball rankings.
