Nebraska Football: Bengals fall short of Husker history
On Sunday, the Cincinnati Bengals had the opportunity to do something that had never been done in regard to Nebraska football. If the Bengals had managed to beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship, it would have meant that more former Huskers were in the Super Bowl than ever before.
The Bengals currently have three former Nebraska football stars as members of the team. As far as players go, there may not be a more impactful player than Cam Taylor-Britt. Britt was drafted in the second round of last year’s NFL Draft and had to miss the beginning of his rookie season with an injury. However, once he came back, he came back with a vengeance and it took no time at all before he was getting enough snaps to be considered one of the bulwarks of the defense.
Wide receiver Stanley Morgan is someone who has been far more impactful as a special teams master than he has on offense. However, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t had plenty of input on the Bengals’ wins. In fact, he’s been called out more than a few times in post-game scrums for his contributions to a victory.
And then of course there’s head coach Zac Taylor. Until recently, it’s been strange how much the Nebraska football program has ignored the fact that a former quarterback was a head coach in the NFL. However, it’s clear Husker fans are embracing what he’s managed to do in the Queen City of late.
With Taylor-Britt and Morgan, combined with the Philadelphia Eagles’ three players (Ndamukong Suh, Cam Jurgens and Jack Stoll) it would have been the most Nebraska football players to ever play in the Super Bowl. Count Taylor and they shatter the record.
Instead, with the three Eagles and Dicaprio Bootle from the Kansas City Chiefs, the Huskers have seen the record tied with four total players.
