The Nebraska Cornhuskers added a few more staffers this weekend as Matt Rhule has continued to reshape the Nebraska football program. More than perhaps any other coach that’s arrived in Lincoln since Bob Devaney, the former Baylor, Temple, and Carolina Panthers head coach, has been reshaping the program both on and off the field.

The first addition was one that Nebraska Cornhuskers fans knew was coming in Dr. Susan Elza. She was director of athletics for the UIL in Texas. The University Interscholastic League is an organization that creates rules for and administers almost all athletic, musical, and academic contests for public primary and secondary schools in Texas. The UIL was the largest organization of its type in the world. Now she brings her expertise to Nebraska.

Rhule also brought former North Carolina Panthers player Mikey Daniel onto the staff as an analyst. Daniel will be working in player development as a player performance analyst.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers News

  • While Matt Rhule doesn’t have the kind of connections to past Nebraska football teams like Scott Frost did, he’s clearly reaching out to former players to build a connection. Most recently, that meant hosting Randy Gregory, who has forged a heck of a career with the Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos into Memorial Stadium.
  • Doug Ewald became a bit of a household name among Nebraska Cornhuskers fans this fall when he went out of his way to deny a rumor that the Huskers were hiring Dave Aranda. However, he is also a good business mind and he recently spoke to the podcast Doc Talk about the business of UNL’s athletics.
  • As we get ready for various Senior Bowls this weekend, Hail Varsity has some reports on how a couple of former Huskers in Garrett Nelson and Adrian Martinez are helping their draft stock during practices.

Other Sports News

  • Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett has mostly been in the news this fall and winter for good reasons like winning the national title, but on Sunday he was in the news after he was arrested for public intoxication.
  • While there’s been a lot of talk about the amount of money players got to transfer this winter, it appears that Alabama is so good that head coach Nick Saban was actually able to turn down a couple of transfers who were looking for a ton of cash. Here’s hoping the Nebraska Cornhuskers can be in that situation at some point.
