When it comes to Nebraska football, just who will play quarterback next season is still a very big question. However, it appears that Las Vegas thinks it has cracked the code. And the quarterback that appears to be the odds-on favorite to win the starting job is also getting some pretty interesting odds when it comes to winning the Heisman.

Jeff Sims comes to the Nebraska football team after fairly decent if not eye-popping seasons with Georgia Tech. However, it appears that Sims being teamed with Matt Rhule, his staff and the skill position players for the Huskers has some people thinking he could be in for a very big season.

The very early odds for Heisman winner are being bandied about by Sports Illustrated and other outlets and they all seem to agree on the same thing. It’s not that Jeff Sims has a “very good” chance at winning the Heisman in 2023 but it’s also not out of the question.

Specifically, SI gives the former Yellow Jackets quarterback a 45 to 1 chance of winning the award given to college football’s most outstanding player. That doesn’t put one of the newest Nebraska football players anywhere near the front of the line of players who could win the award, but he’s not exactly pulling a distant afterthought either.

Among the notable players that have the same odds to win the award is Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr who finished with 77 catches for 1,263 yards and 14 touchdowns as a sophomore. There’s also Buckeyes QB Devin Brown, who is also the favorite to take over for departing star CJ Stroud.

That’s not to say that Sims is all that close to the Heisman front runners. By comparison the top favorite is USC quarterback Caleb Williams who is just 3.5 to 1. Drake Maye (9 to 1) and Bo Nix (11 to 1) are his closest competitors.

All of this goes to show that Jeff Sims and, by extension, Nebraska football would need to have an insane season in order for him to actually win the award. But it’s clear that national pundits believe at the very least, he could have a very nice 2023 if things fall right.
