The Nebraska Cornhuskers football team may have lost out on tight end Brett Seither, but they came away the victors in the race to gain one of his teammates’ services. Lineback MJ Sherman, who was once a 5-star prospect in the 2020 class announced he’d committed to the Huskers on Monday afternoon.

The announcement actually came just minutes after it was revealed that Seither had decided to attend Georgia Tech instead of Nebraska. To say the landing of Sherman blunted the pain of missing out on the tight end is a bit of an understatement.

Sherman entered the transfer portal three days before deciding on the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Some might wonder if there were a chance the situation would turn into another Walter Rouse, but accounts from those who know the former Georgia linebacker say he’ll stick to his word. It helps that the official transfer portal period ends on January 18.

Sherman did appear in 39 games in his three years at Georgia, though almost all of them were on special teams. For the Nebraska football team, he’ll be given every opportunity to earn a starting job as a linebacker or defensive end.

Other Nebraska Cornhuskers News

  • Sherman was only the first piece of good news on Monday afternoon. The other was that wide receiver Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda has withdrawn from the transfer portal. While the receiver seemed to have a problem with former coach Mickey Joseph, it appears that Matt Rhule and company will give him another chance. Garcia-Castaneda showed flashes of being an impact player in the Huskers’ season opener last year, as he caught four passes for 120 yards and a touchdown. However, he only had one reception for the rest of the season.
  • Former Husker kicker Brett Maher had about as bad a day on Monday as any NFL kicker has ever had. He set an NFL record after missing his first four extra points in the Dallas Cowboys’ game against Tampa Bay. He also became the butt of many jokes on social media.

Other Sports News

  • The biggest news of the day for the Big Ten and the NFL was that CJ Stroud announced he was going pro. There was a time when it looked like he might choose to stick with the Ohio State Buckeyes. That didn’t come to pass.
  • Stroud wasn’t the only player that waited until the last possible moment to announce he was going pro. TCU receiver Quentin Johnson and USC receiver Jordan Addison also both announced on the last day that they could. It appears this is part of the brave new NIL world. Some players will wait and see if their schools can come up with the cash to keep them.
