The Nebraska football recruiting apparatus is on quite a roll these days. Matt Rhule and company seem to be having quite a bit of success for the last month. That doesn’t mean that the Huskers are totally bulletproof.

The Nebraska football recruiting efforts have been focused especially on keeping in-state kids inside Nebraska borders. But that doesn’t mean those efforts are going unchallenged. That’s especially the case with a kid who will be one of the top tight ends in the 2024 class.

Carter Nelson has a ton of Power 5 offers. More than a few of them have come from the Big Ten. Until this week, Michigan was not one of the schools that came calling. Now Jim Harbaugh and his Wolverines are indeed looking for the Eight-Man star. And the Huskers indeed have yet another school they’re going to have to fight off.

Nelson has long been an incredibly interesting story. He’s not coming from a school that would normally garner him the kind of attention he’s gotten. In fact, for the most part, playing for Ainsworth would mean that he’d be lucky to get a preferred walk on offer.

Carter Nelson is entirely a different story. He’s someone who has managed to stand out to the point where he’s got more than 17 offers. Other than Nebraska football recruiting and Michigan, schools like Auburn, Baylor, Notre Dame and Penn State are interested.

Currently, most of the major recruiting services have Nelson as a lean toward the Huskers. That’s likely because of where he lives and where he grew up. However, it’s not quite the big lead that some might expect from an Ainsworth product.

The good news here is that Matt Rhule and his staff seem to be making some good connections to the recruits they’re going after. That could be good enough for Nebraska football recruiting to have success versus Michigan.
