Could Nebraska football recruiting efforts be about to zero in on yet another Florida Gator defensive back? It certainly will if one of the newest Huskers has anything to say about it.

Should the Nebraska football recruiting operations actually grab the latest Gator DB to enter the portal, he might be the best of the bunch. It would certainly be an interesting pipeline that’s getting set up by Matt Rhule and his new staff.

Third-year sophomore Tre’Vez Johnson announced on Friday that he’s officially entering the portal. It took no time at all for Corey Collier Jr. to take notice and start peer recruiting.

The question, of course, is whether or not the Nebraska football recruiting focus will center on Johnson, though it would certainly seem as though they’d at least take his temperature. It appears that he’s got Collier’s stamp of approval. It seems unlikely he wouldn’t be pushing the staff to at least see if Johnson would be interested in coming to Lincoln.

Nebraska Football Recruiting Focusing On Florida Gators

Tre’Vez Johnson appeared in 11 games for the SEC team this past season, though he did end up skipping the Gators’ bowl game. In those 11 contests, he posted 26 tackles, two passes defended, two fumble recoveries and an interception.

While those stats aren’t totally eye-popping, he’s considered one of the better defensive backs at Florida and he will almost certainly be much sought after by anyone looking for a veteran presence in the defensive backfield. That’s why he’ll likely be a big target of Nebraska football recruiting.

Johnson has progressed as player over his three seasons and as far as PFF grades, 2022 was his best season. Overall he rated as a 60.7 defender and had a 62.3 pass coverage rating. That was his career best by quite a lot.

While neither of those numbers are fantastic, there is reason to be optimistic as his three best games of the year were the last three games of the season. Nebraska football recruiting watchers will want to keep an eye on Tre’Vez Johnson and see if the Huskers can reel in another Florida Gator transfer.
