The Nebraska football team is slowly and surely getting its staff put together. It’s likely that Matt Rhule is actually taking a bit too long for some people. Especially since the transfer portal officially opened Monday and things started moving hot and heavy rather quickly.

Of course, it’s possible that things are moving behind the scenes and Nebraska football fans just aren’t privy to what’s going on. Rhule has actually been pretty quiet when it comes to his staff, maybe because some members of his team aren’t yet ready to announce they’ve joined the party. That could include his new offensive line coach. If the rumblings are true, then the new offensive line coach is actually a former Huskers offensive line coach as well.

On Tuesday, rumors started circling around social media that former Nebraska football star Frank Solich and former Husker coach Bo Pelini could be making a return. John Garrison has been spending his most recent days at North Carolina State with one-time Nebraska football prospect Dave Doeren.

Some of the reasons the rumors around Garrison have started might be more than a little silly. Some have pointed to the fact that he’s liked a few tweets here and there. On the other hand, there’s a push behind his name for a coaching position that’s still unfilled.

Garrison fits the bill of a coach which tends to be a requirement of Cornhusker staff. He’s got Nebraska football ties, both as a player and a coach. He was the last offensive line coach under Bo Pelini in 2013 and 2014 and moved on to UNLV when Pelini and company were fired.

While having Husker ties would get a certain group of people excited, his coaching experience is something that would get another group of fans hyped up. After leaving Lincoln he took a job as run game coordinator and offensive line coach for the Running Rebels from 2015 to 2017 and then took the same job for FAU in 2018.

In 2019 he took the offensive line coach position at North Carolina State and has been there ever since. So why might Garrison leave the Wolfpack to come back to Lincoln? There’s already been a bit of a shift in Doeren’s staff. Former offensive coordinator Tim Beck was just hired as the head coach of Coastal Carolina.

It’s possible that whoever ends up being the new OC at NC State might want to change up the staff. Or maybe Garrison could just decide it’s time for a fresh start with a new staff for Nebraska football. Stay tuned.
