Nebraska Football: Former Huskers OC Tim Beck to lead Coastal Carolina
While the Nebraska football team is busy welcoming new head coach Matt Rhule, the coaching carousel has kept on spinning. Earlier this morning it was reported that Coastal Carolina head coach Jamey Chadwell was leaving the program to fill the spot left by Hugh Freeze at Liberty. Now it appears that former Huskers’ offensive coordinator Tim Beck is expected to be hired by the Chanticleers to lead the Sun Belt program.
While nothing is official yet, it appears that things are moving very quickly on Sunday morning. Hugh Freeze moved to Auburn last week. Liberty apparently didn’t take much time to find his replacement in what some might see as a weirdly lateral move for Chadwell.
Former Nebraska football coach Tim Beck on the other hand, is getting a promotion. It turns out that should things become official, it would be the first college head coach job for the veteran coordinator.
There are more than a few Husker fans that might be surprised about this hire. When he left Lincoln in 2014, Nebraska football faithful did not exactly shed a tear. However, it’s possible he took the brunt of the blame when it belonged elsewhere (cough Bo Pelini cough).
Tim Beck has had quite a successful career since leaving the Nebraska football program. He immediately joined Ohio State, first as their quarterback coach and then as offensive coordinator. He stuck there for two years before moving to Texas from 2017 to 2019 in the same positions.
Former Nebraska Football Coach Almost Makes A Return
In 2020, he joined Dave Doeren’s staff at North Carolina State as the OC and QB coach.
It’s worth noting that if things had worked out differently, Beck might actually be back as a member of the Nebraska football staff. While the Huskers landed on Matt Rhule, Doeren was one of the reported 13 coaches that athletic director Trev Alberts talked to in his search for a permanent replacement for Scott Frost.
Should Doeren have been hired here, it seems he likely would have brought over an offensive coordinator that led a Wolf Pack offensive extension. Instead the former Nebraska football coach will reportedly take over a team that has been known for its offensive prowess the last few years.
