Nebraska Football Recruiting: Phil Jurkovec could provide immediate QB help
Now that Matt Rhule is officially heading up Nebraska football recruiting, there are a couple of different directions the team could go. That includes bringing in a veteran quarterback who might be able to run Marcus Satterfield’s offense plenty effectively. It just so happens that a quarterback from Boston College fits that bill and just entered the transfer portal.
Phil Jurkovec has had a somewhat effective career for Boston College, 2022 not withstanding. He’s now looking to take his talents elsewhere. And it just so happens that there is at least a chance that the Nebraska football team could be looking for a new signal caller if Casey Thompson decides to depart.
Jurkovec could actually be the perfect solution should Thompson decide he doesn’t want to spend another year in Lincoln. He’s got some mobility and is a very good passer as well. While Satterfield’s offense looks better with a quarterback who can move around, the Huskers aren’t likely to be running something like fans saw with Scott Frost. Luckily it’s also unlikely to be what they saw with Mark Whipple. Imagine it will be something in between.
Looking at Jurkovec’s stats this year, it might be hard to see his mobility as he actually had negative rushing yard. However, one only has to look back to 2021 to see what the former Boston College QB1 has to offer. Of course, to some degree, he’s a bit of an enigma who could use someone who can unlock his full potential.
Last year, Jurkovec only threw for 914 yards, 7 touchdowns and 4 INTs but he also rushed for over 300 yards and five touchdowns. This season, he actually had more success through the air. He had 1,711 yards, 11 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. But he didn’t do any damage on the ground.
Should the Nebraska football recruiting operation focus on Phil Jurkovec, it will be for just one season. He’s leaving Boston College as a graduate transfer and will have one more season of college football in him.
Of course, if Matt Rhule wants to land the former Boston College player, he’ll need to lure him away from the East Coast. If anyone can point out to an East Coaster the lure of the midwest, it would be Rhule.
