The Nebraska football team is once again entering the weekend as a double-digit underdog. Things didn’t go well when they were almost four touchdown dogs to Michigan last week. In fact, the Wolverines ended up covering the spread. So should Husker fans despair against the Wisconsin Badgers? Maybe not.

It turns out that, as of now, Casey Thompson is returning to lead the  Huskers against the Badgers after missing most or all of the last three games. It can’t be stated enough how important Thompson being behind center is to the Cornhuskers.

Against both Illinois and Minnesota, it felt like a more competent quarterback could have made the difference. There were times when the Nebraska football team looked like one drive could be the difference in the game. Neither Logan Smothers nor Chubba Purdy were able to deliver that drive.

But with Casey Thompson back, the Nebraska football team has its field general again. Thompson hasn’t been perfect, far from it. But he’s been quite a bit better than those who have tried to take over the starting quarterback mantle.

The fact of the matter is that this might be the best shot in years that the Cornhuskers have had to take down the Wisconsin Badgers. Wiscy just isn’t that good.

The Badgers are coming off a 24-10 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes of all teams. That they allowed two offensive touchdowns to the woefully inept Nate Petras-led squad should give Nebraska football fans hope.

Like the Huskers, the Badgers are dealing with an interim coach who might still be trying to find his footing as the man in charge. Having Casey Thompson leading the Nebraska football team against the weak and battered Wisconsin squad can only be a good thing. It might just be the spark the team needs to put an exclamation point to Senior Day.
