As the Nebraska football head coaching search continued on this week, a bit of wrinkle was thrown into the situation with the firing of former Carolina Panthers head coach Matt Rhule. However, it appears that while the former Temple and Baylor coach offered something other candidates couldn’t in that he is available right freaking now, there are some whispers that the’s not actually interested in the Huskers’ job.
As has been the case from the first day of the Cornhuskers’ coaching search, everything is rumors and innuendo. Rhule, of course, has not come out and said whether he’s interested in anything one way or another. After all, he’s only been unemployed for a couple of days. On the other hand, these kinds of reports are usually put out there by people close to those involved on purpose.
Colllege football analyst Greg McElroy took to Twitter earlier this week to try and bring some focus on the Matt Rhule coaching search. The former Texas A&M Aggies quarterback tweeted that he’d been “told” that there are “very few” CFB jobs the recently unemployed coach would take.
That statement alone doesn’t rule out the Nebraska football team. However, McElroy also said that at the moment, Rhule isn’t interested in any of the jobs currently open. That in fact, does rule out the Huskers.
McElroy did add that money could, of course, change things. However, Matt Rhule already has a ton of money, thanks to his buyout from the Panthers. Because of that, the man who built up both Temple and Baylor after finding them smoking heaps doesn’t have to take the first job that comes along.
Considering the state of the Nebraska football program, money is going to be the big lure. It’s long been thought as is the equalizer when it comes to getting a big fish on the hook. It appears that won’t be the situation when it comes to Nebraska football and Matt Rhule.
