The Nebraska football team is back in action on Saturday night after its bye week. While there is yet another renewed sense of energy and excitement following the firing of Erik Chinander and the shuffling of the staff, there’s also a very real sense that Husker fans simply don’t know what team they’re going to see on Saturday.

Are they going to see a Nebraska football team that had people predicting a final record of 8-4 or 7-5? Or are they just going to see more of the same team that is 1-3 and can’t stop anybody on defense?

The biggest question of the game has to come first in this list and it really shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

Can Bill Busch improve the Nebraska football defense?

While Bill Busch has said all the right things since being elevated to defensive coordinator, there’s still a very real question as to whether or not the shifts in the depth chart and simplifying of the defensive game plan will actually mean all that much.

Honestly, the biggest question of all when it comes to the defense this season is whether or not the Huskers’ struggles on the defensive side of the ball are due to Chinander being a bad coach or a bad judge of talent.

It seems hard to believe that allowing a team like Georgia Southern to run all over them was all about the scheme. It’s entirely possible that the Cornhuskers are just not as good on defense as everyone assumed they would be in 2022.

The good news is that it certainly seems as though Nebraska football fans are going to find out relatively early into the game whether or not Busch has put some schemes into effect that will actually fix things. The “good” news is that the Cornhuskers are 126th in the country out of 131 teams in defensive efficiency, so it would be incredibly hard to do worse.
