Nebraska football might have been the first program this year to fire its head coach, but it was never going to be the last. That other schools appear to be following suit so quickly, could be a bad thing, considering the pace at which AD Trev Alberts has said he wants to move.
On Sunday afternoon, not long after the Nebraska football team rid itself of its defensive coordinator, Arizona State had an announcement of its own. It was cutting ties with head coach Herm Edwards just one day after the Sun Devils lost at home, 30-21 to Eastern Michigan.
While ASU has started 1-2 this season, the firing of Edwards this early in the season raised some eyebrows. The former NFL coach has forged a 26-20 record in the college ranks and went 8-5 in 2021.
Interestingly enough, Edwards’ firing means that he’ll reenter the coaching carousel with his Nebraska football counterpart after both coaches were hired by their respective schools in the same year.
Edwards might be the latest, but he’s not going to be the last. It seems as if the Huskers’ moves and the realization that they are the only school out there looking for a replacement has spurred some other programs to start looking at making a move.
It wasn’t all that long after Arizona State fired its coach that Colorado started talking about doing the same. In the Buffaloes’ case, the school hasn’t made a move yet. However, it’s clear from the statement it issued that might not be long.
Colorado’s AD said that, like the rest of the fans, he is disappointed by CU’s performance on the field. He concluded the statement by saying he wanted to see a win against UCLA on Saturday. It stands to reason that if a win doesn’t come, Karl Dorrell could be the next to go.
If Dorrell somehow isn’t the next coach to enter the carousel, there’s going to be another. Auburn’s Bryan Harsin is one that’s been rumored to be getting fired any day now.
All of this seems a bit early in the season for this kind of stuff. But Nebraska football seems to have kicked things off early.
