The Nebraska football team was dominated on Saturday morning and afternoon by an Oklahoma team that was simply too well coached and had too much talent for the Huskers to stay within a couple of touchdowns for long.
Of course, while most Nebraska football fans who were staring reality in the face thought a double-digit loss to the Sooners was in the offing, the way the Cornhuskers played … again was still a bit concerning.
It sounds as if it was concerning most of all to Interim Head Coach Mickey Joseph. Now that the Cornhuskers have nearly two weeks to prepare for their next game, there are rumblings in Lincoln that more staff changes are coming on Sunday.
To some degree, that shouldn’t come as a big surprise. When Nebraska AD Trev Alberts announced that Joseph was getting the job, he made it clear that the new head coach would be allowed to “make changes as he saw fit”
Two days later, Joseph did make a few small tweaks, like having defensive coordinator Erik Chinander take over coaching the corners. There was also more tackling in practice. But the changes that some people expected, such as firing a few defensive coaches, didn’t come.
They could be coming before the weekend is out. Whispers around the program say that Chinander will indeed be let go after yet another abysmal performance by the defense. There is also a chance that a few other coaches might be on the way out as well.
As to who could be following Chinander out the door? It seems like it could be almost anybody or nobody. The good news is that it doesn’t seem like Nebraska football fans will have to wait long. The axe should fall about as quickly as it did for former head coach Scott Frost.
That means an announcement could come as soon as noon. Once these new changes have been made, Mickey Joseph and the rest of the Nebraska football program can get to work preparing for Indiana and the rest of the season, with a bit of extra time thanks to the upcoming bye week.
