The Nebraska football team has just officially started looking for its next head coach. In the meantime, Mickey Joseph has been named the interim coach. There’s been a lot of talk over the last few days as to how likely it is that he’ll eventually get the full-time gig. Now at least one oddsmaker laid out the chance of that coming to fruition as well as who the front runner is for the job.
The reality is that at the moment, according to Bookies.com Dan Kilbridge, Joseph has a decent shot, but isn’t the man that has the best chances. The man who is currently leading the pack when it comes to who to lay money on is a familiar name to Husker fans though as he’s already been mentioned more than a few times. Matt Campbell currently leads the pack and it’s really not all that close.
Campbell currently sits at +350 odds to be named the next head coach at Nebraska. That translates to an implied probability of 22.2 percent that the current Iowa State head coach will be leading the Huskers by the time the year is out.
Considering just how often Campbell has been mentioned just four days after Frost was fired, it shouldn’t surprise anyone he’s the official odds-on favorite. However, Kansas head coach Lance Leipold being considered the second highest probability might surprise some. He’s currently sitting at +500, which translates to 16.6 percent probability that he’ll be the guy.
According to Bookies.com, those who are hoping Joseph gets the job aren’t hopeless. He comes in tied for third on this list. Both he and Mark Stoops are clocking in at +700. That means they each have a 12.5 percent chance of getting the Nebraska football head coaching job.
When it comes to some names that have been early favorites among fans, it appears the oddsmakers see them as longshots. Baylor head coach Dave Aranda has just a 4.76 percent probability of getting the job. Urban Meyer is a little better at 7.69 percent.
Certainly, these odds should be taken with a grain of salt. On the other hand, it should be pointed out that Bookies.com odds about Frost being the first coach fired were released just days before he was indeed the first fired.
Of course, this time around, if Matt Campbell is the guy for Nebraska football, we’ll be waiting a while to see.
