Nebraska Football: Blackshirts, Nickelback decision is still a ways off

The Nebraska football team’s defense is rounding into form.

That’s the word out of Tuesday’s post-practice press conference with defensive coordinator Erik Chinander.

While he’s been mostly happy with what he’s seen in scrimmages and practices, there are still quite a few questions that will need to be answered between now and the Huskers’ game against Northwestern in Ireland on August 27.

Right at the top of the list of questions is when exactly will the Huskers hand out Blackshirts and what will be the policy as far as who will get them.

Chinander told the assembled media that when exactly the Blackshirts will get handed out is something he still needs to talk to head coach Scott Frost about. While not shedding much light on how many might get handed out in the first go, it sounds he left the door open as to when as well.

Chinander said that the Nebraska football team could get its Blackshirts right before they leave for Ireland, or right after they get there. At the very least, that indicates Huskers fans aren’t going to get a huge lead time in finding out who will be wearing the iconic practice jerseys before the contest against Northwestern.

Nebraska football and the Nickelback slot

While Chinander didn’t have a ton of solid answers on position battles, he did make it clear that at this point, the Nickelback position is very much up for grabs.

During the post-practice press conference, the defensive coordinator said that at the moment, the depth chart has a lot of “or” in it with each of  Isaac Gifford, Chris Kolarevic or Javin Wright starting at the spot and getting ton of playing time.

When asked whether Gifford might have the inside edge on the position as he played there quite a bit towards the end of last season, Chinander was diplomatic, saying that Gifford did “a few things right” and “a few things wrong” last year.

With little detail beyond that it does appear as though the Nickelback slot is going to a position to watch not only for the rest of fall camp but when the Nebraska football team kicks off against Northwestern.
