Nebraska Football: Mark Whipple Expresses Frustration Over Wednesday Practice

It just might be that the Nebraska football team hasn’t settled on a starting quarterback just yet. While head coach Scott Frost has officially gone on record as stating that the job is Casey Thompson‘s to lose, it appears that Chubba Purdy is still in the running. That was just one of the details that offensive coordinator Mark Whipple let slip during Wednesday afternoon’s post-practice press conference.

Another little detail that Whipple shared with the assembled media is that he wasn’t exactly thrilled about the way his offense practiced today. On the other hand, it wasn’t exactly like he was spitting fire and brimstone over the situation.

Whipple said that the Nebraska football team’s offense just seemed to lack a bit of juice on Wednesday. That in turn, led to the offense getting beat pretty soundly by the defense. However, the new OC also made it clear that he’s seen this kind of thing in practice more often than not.

He also praised how the offense has been playing throughout most of the preseason camp, especially last weekend. At the same time, he made it clear that while this kind of lack of energy isn’t a thing to get too worried about, it’s something the coaching staff is going to be working on stomping out.

The potentially earthshaking news that Thompson and Purdy are sharing the starter snaps should raise more than a few eyebrows. They were followed by comments from Purdy himself that he plans to get on the plane for Ireland with the expectation that he’ll be starting the game against the Northwestern Wildcats on August 27.

Since the job was his to lose, could it then be assumed that he is indeed losing the job? It seems more likely that Purdy is getting plenty of looks in order to both keep him sharp and keep him happy. Both quarterbacks have transferred before because of playing time. It’s possible the coaching staff is keeping things interesting in part for the benefit of their two potential stars.
