While there is quite a bit of excitement around what this season of Nebraska football might entail, most discussions tend to center around the Huskers making it to a bowl game in 2022. However, it turns out that at least one national expert remarkably has the Cornhuskers ranked in his pre-season Top 10.

Before fans start to wonder if perhaps Andy Staples has fallen and hit his head, it should be pointed out that his official Andy Staples Show Computer Laptop Organized Win Nexus rankings are mostly tongue in cheek. In fact, it’s a safe bet they are almost entirely tongue in cheek, even if there are some teams that he honestly believes do belong in the Top 10 of the College Football world.

Staples and Ari Wasserman were discussing the Andy Staples Show Computer Laptop Organized Win Nexus rankings (seriously, take a look at what the acronym would be, and you get a clue just how serious he takes this) on The Andy Staples Show podcast. While some of the Top 15 rankings seemed at least a little serious, eventually, it was clear that some of the rankings were based more on how many people would be angry with them.

Coastal Carolina reaching the Top 10 was the first sign that things were going off the rails. Then there was Notre Dame’s ranking at number nine, where Staples and Wasserman talked about how annoyed people would be to simultaneously see the Fighting Irish ranked both that high and that low. However, the Nebraska football team at number eight on the rankings made it clear Staples and Wasserman were pretty intentionally trolling their followers, or perhaps trolling their trolls would be more accurate.

While first announcing the Huskers at eight, Staples first stated that it “can’t possibly get any worse” for Nebraska football. He then backtracked and said it could get worse if things continued going wrong.

As was the case with most of the rest of their rankings, there was a bit of truth mixed in with their messing around. Both Staples and Wasserman pointed out that if the Cornhuskers go to Ireland and lose to Northwestern – the only conference win for Scott Frost and company last year – things could get worse in a hurry.

Next. Time to beat up on Northwestern. dark

While it’s clear neither expert believes the Nebraska football team should begin the year in the Top 10, their comments about the game against the Wildcats in just over two weeks seem prescient. The tilt in Ireland isn’t just another season opener. It could set the tone in several ways and could help make or could help break the Huskers’ 2022 season.
