Former Nebraska Cornhuskers pitcher Cade Povich is having a very nice 2022 season as he tries to work his way up to the Bigs. He’s also making a nice impact with his brand new team.
The former Husker hurler was just named as the South Atlantic League’s Pitcher of the Week thanks to an extremely strong first outing with the Aberdeen Iron Birds. The Iron Birds are the Baltimore Orioles’ High A minor league club.
Povich earned the honor by throwing six innings of shutout ball. Not only did he not allow a run, but he only allowed one hit while striking out eight. That he managed to do this in his first start with Aberdeen has to be impressing somebody with the big club, which is having itself its own fantastic 2022.
The former Nebraska Cornhuskers pitcher was traded to the Orioles as part of a package the Twins were willing to deal in order to try and get All-Star closer Jorge Lopez. It’s starting to look like the O’s who have gone on a hot streak even without their closer, were the big winners in that particular deal.
Even before the trade Povich was making a name for himself as an up and comer in the Twins’ minor league system. Working in High A Cedar Rapids, he’d gone 6-8 with a 4.46 earned run average.
While those numbers might look a bit pedestrian, even if they’re a decent run for a kid in his second professional season, it’s the 107 strikeouts in 78 innings that should raise quite a few eyebrows. The even better news is that it doesn’t appear to be a fluke. While he got little more than a cup of coffee in professional baseball in 2021, he struck out 19 batters in just 10 innings in Rookie and A Ball.
Povich’s good run in the minors follows a breakout season for the Big Ten champion Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team, where he went 6-1 with a 3.11 earned run average. He also struck out 88 batters in just 81 innings pitched for the cinderella squad. For now, it appears that all things are looking up for Cade Povich as he looks to close out the year strong.
