Nebraska volleyball fans are thrilled at the news that outside hitter Lexi Sun will be utilizing her extra year of eligibility and returning to the program for the 2021 season. She’s the first of the four seniors to exercise the extra year.

With her return, the Huskers are going to be a terrifying team to face this year. Not only are they getting Sun, who is one of their best hitters, back in the offense, but they’re adding the three best recruits in the country. Sun is also stout on defense, which is the bread and butter of this Nebraska program and has been for quite some time.

Lexi Sun is returning to Nebraska volleyball.

This is exciting news for the program and it’s awesome for Sun. She didn’t get to have a true senior season due to the pandemic and now she’ll get an opportunity to do so. It’s still unknown if Lauren Stivrins plans to return but if she were to return, it’d be her sixth year with the program, as she redshirted in 2016.

Per Derek Peterson of Hail Varsity,

"A two-time Big Ten Player of the Week during the 11-week regular season, Sun led Nebraska with 3.64 kills per set and added 2.21 digs per set. She recorded five double-doubles on the season and totaled 43 blocks and a team-high 26 service aces."

Sun’s presence with this team can’t be understated. Yes, she’s had her fair share of rough games but when she’s on, she’s unstoppable. The Cornhuskers won’t turn down the opportunity to have her back in 2021 and this is a team that’s going to do a lot of damage. They can definitely vie for the Big Ten title this year, which is something they haven’t achieved since 2016.

With the new faces coming to Lincoln paired with the talent the team already had, Sun likely returned because she believes this team can win it all in December. They haven’t been to the National Championship since 2018 where they lost in five sets to Stanford but they’re about to go on another epic run with these new recruits coming in.
