Nebraska football always seems to be looking for another quarterback to add to future classes, and they appear to have zeroed in on one particular target. 2023 signal-caller Reese Mooney says he hears from the Nebraska football coaches quite frequently, something that may work in the staff’s favor down the road.

Mooney is a three-star quarterback in the 247Sports regular rankings. In addition to Nebraska, he also has offers from the likes of Cincinnati, Miami, Ole Miss, and West Virginia.  Most recently, he received an offer from Illinois on March 29.

He fits the mold of what Nebraska football is looking for  in a quarterback. He is a pro-style quarterback, but he possesses a lot of the traits that Nebraska looks for in their quarterbacks in general. He can make accurate throws on the run, and can also throw the deep ball very well. Measuring in at six-foot-one, 191 pounds, he does not necessarily have the complete build of a pro-style quarterback. Nevertheless, his play style certainly lends itself to that category.

He would be able to give Nebraska football someone who can accurately throw the deep ball, and also a quarterback who is able to feel pressure and get out of the pocket quickly. This is exactly what they need. Too often, Nebraska football quarterbacks have not been able to complete passes down the field because they simply do not have the arm strength. Other times, it has been due to the play of the line. However, I expect play of the line to not be an issue for much longer.

Currently, Nebraska football has no commitments in the 2023 recruiting class.

Speaking about his relationship with the Nebraska football coaches earlier in the week, Mooney had high praise for the entire staff. In praising the coaching staff, he also gave a look into how consistent they have been in their approach for recruiting him. He talks to Scott Frost and Mario Verduzco quite frequently in particular.

"“It’s like a father-son relationship, they treat me like their own sons and I talk to them daily,” Mooney told the Journal Star this week. “If I ever want to talk to somebody or something like that, I can always talk to one of them.”"

This would be a big get for Nebraska football, as it will continue their pipeline for quarterbacks. It seems like they always want to at least get one quarterback for each class a couple of years beforehand. It seems like that’s exactly what they want to do with Mooney.

To make matters even more intriguing, Mooney is coming to Nebraska next weekend for the spring game. He will be one of a handful of visitors coming into town for that event. It is going to be a big day for many reasons all around.
