It’s no secret that we all wanted to see what Nebraska football wide receiver Omar Manning could do last year. Nevertheless, between injuries and issues off the field, we never really got to see what he could bring to the table.

Now, it appears that the coaching staff is finally really getting to see what he can do. Now ,it’s up to him to see if he can live up to that buzz. The open practice was certainly a good steppingstone for him, and it allowed him to get some reps in.

The wide receiver group is one that is under a lot of pressure to perform in the 2021 season. After a dismal year last year, they need to make things easier for the Nebraska football quarterbacks. Manning should be a huge part of that. Right now, he is performing when it matters most.

Speaking to the media on Monday, head coach Scott Frost was pleased with what he saw from Manning on Saturday. The athleticism that he is rumored to have was very much evident on Saturday. His leaping ability and his ability to win his matchup against the defensive backs was also very much apparent. In referencing the strides made by the wide receiver group, Frost had nothing but high praise for Manning.

In just reading what secondaries coach Travis Fisher had to say, Manning could be in line for a big season. As long as he stays healthy and is able to give his best efforts, he should be able to be a major contributor in short order.

"Fisher said the receiver group as a whole has gotten a lot better. “You watched it Saturday. Omar (Manning) made a lot of plays, but that receiver group made some plays as well. So I think there’s a lot of guys on the offensive side of the ball picking up some steam. And my guys are getting a chance to have that kind of competition. Guys like Omar, every single play is a problem. Those guys getting a chance to practice against someone  like that every day is getting them ready to play in a big game.”"

It sounds like he is coming in as advertised. 2021 is going to be a major year for him if he can continue to make advances and get better. I can see him becoming the top receiver for the Nebraska football program very quickly in 2021.

Right now, it is just about the building blocks. If the open practice was a building block for Manning, he certainly completed that test.
