There is little doubt that the Nebraska football offensive line was a bit of a disappointment last year. They were inconsistent throughout the course of the season, but they did manage to redeem themselves in the finale against Rutgers December. As a matter of fact, I would argue that their game against Rutgers was their best one of the year as group.

Now, Nebraska football and their fans hope that the line can be equally as consistent throughout the 2021 season. Just in that season finale alone, there was a lot to build off of. With several young players starting in that game, it offered a promising glimpse for the future. for me, I’m going to want to see how they carry that solid performance over into next season.

A veteran on the line, Cam Jurgens talked about how that group needs to set the tone for the offense.  I agree with him. Although the quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers are the ones given the credit when they make the flashy plays, the line makes it all work. From giving the quarterback protection, to opening up holes for the running back, they do a little bit of everything.

Jurgens talked about how they need to be the group that leads the offense. As one of the veterans on the line this year, he is going to have a big responsibility in making sure the group is able to execute properly. He is going to need to be a leader. He is going to have to focus on snapping the football better, something that he is committed to doing. Perhaps even more encouraging, he wants to be a leader.

"“I would say we want to be the tone-setters of the offense,” Jurgens said. “We want to be aggressive, want to be mean. We want to go out there and set the tone for the game. That’s how the O-line and D-line should be playing. But we also need to be smart. We can’t have as many penalties as we had last year, so we need to work on cleaning up all those penalties, but just playing aggressive and mean.”"

Between being committed on being only, and setting high expectations for the line, I myself have high expectations for this group next year. They need to take that step forward that we thought they were going to last year. Another step back in 2021 will be inexcusable.

I will be interested to see how this group does over the course of these spring practices. They certainly have a lot on their plate as far as responsibility and expectations. Now, they need to execute.
