One of the things that Nebraska football has made a commitment to doing this spring is putting new wide receiver Samori Toure in the slot. Let me just say, that I think that is a good move. If for some reason it doesn’t work, spring practice is the perfect place to try these things.

There is no doubt that the talent is there for him. He had 2,488 receiving yards for the University of Montana. One thing I noticed about him when watching his highlights is that he had a very good ability to run after the catch.  His speed and his ability to make things happen in that area could make him the perfect slot receiver.

However, it doesn’t sound like he is going to be limited there. It sounds like Nebraska recognizes that he has the ability to play multiple positions. Nevertheless, the slot position is certainly intriguing for me. His move there is intriguing for a couple of reasons.

For one, his athleticism and his ability to go after football’s makes him the perfect slot receiver. Oftentimes, those receivers will play in the middle of the field. This lends them to high throws and jump balls. He excels in that area as coach Matt Lubick alluded to on Wednesday. He will be able to put his full range of athletic skills on display.

For another, he has sure hands. That is exactly what you want out of your slot receiver, because they are traditionally relied on as security blankets who can make important catches when needed most. Not only that, he is a veteran of college football. He knows what it takes to make the difficult catches, and he can make them.

As Lubick noted, Toure has those qualities and that versatility to be able to make him successful.

"“He can do a lot of different things,” Lubick said. “He’s very smart. He’s an experienced player who has played four years of football. Comes from a great program. Very well coached. Learns fast. Big-bodied guy that has great catch radius. Can go up and attack a ball in the air.”On that latter point, Lubick added that, “50-50 balls aren’t 50-50 with him. He goes up and gets them. And then he’s a very good route runner, very polished.”"

That type of playmaking is exactly what Nebraska football needs on offense. They need this wide receiver group to be explosive, and they need them to be playmakers. Toure should be able to provide that.

dark. Next. Domann's expectations are realistic

I’m excited to see what he does this spring. Now is the chance for him to show what he can do, and now is a chance for him to show what he can bring to the unit. There is a lot of talent on this unit, and he could definitely be a part of that. He has the talent to make it happen.
