This is a nice addition for Nebraska basketball.

Nebraska basketball will be somewhat of a family affair. Thursday, Sam Hoiberg that he would play for his father and committed to Nebraska basketball.

Hoiberg played at Lincoln Pius X, and had a very good 2019-20 season. He averaged 14.4 points per game and 4.5 rebounds per game. He will be joining the Nebraska basketball program as a preferred walk-on.

This is certainly intriguing, as I would love to see what type of skill he has. There is no doubt that his father is a solid coach and basketball runs in the family. His brother Jack is still in the transfer portal after playing at Michigan State. Could Jack come to Nebraska? Will have to wait and see. With how crazy the transfer portal is these days, you just never know.

All things considered, Hoiberg seems like a pretty solid basketball player. With the talent coming into the program already, Hoiberg will certainly have to fight for playing time. That is not a bad thing. I would rather have him fight for playing time because the program has many good players  than to have not enough depth.

I refer back to this all the time when I talk about football recruiting. It is great to see a local kid be able to play for the Nebraska Athletics programs. Whether he or she is a walk-on or a five-star recruit, it is great to see the Nebraska athletes stay home and try to succeed. I’ll be interested to see how he does and if he can hold his own against some very good players coming in.

All and all, it’s great that another Hoiberg will be coming to the program. That certainly makes for something to watch for, as the coach’s kid will now have a shot to succeed. The fact that he is local, and the fact that he has talented makes it even more exciting. He has legitimate skill, and that there is a very good chance he can make a positive impact for this team down the road.
