The former Nebraska football running back wants to work on  his game.

This upcoming Nebraska pro day could be big for several Nebraska football alumni. For one alum in particular, this pro day certainly carries a little bit of extra weight. Running back Dedrick Mills rumbled his way through the Nebraska football backfield over the past couple of seasons. Now, he has to prove his value in the National Football League.

How can do that exactly? He needs to prove he has speed. Personally, I have seen it with my own eyes. Especially when he got into the open field, he was very good at turning on the jets and reaching the end zone. Nevertheless, there was no doubt that he was a power back in the truest sense of the word. He rumbled his way through holes. He ran over defenders. However, that style of play may not necessarily work in today’s National Football League that is all about offense.

Speed is the name of the game for Mills, and he wants to show that he has that. In my opinion, if he can improve on his speed just a little bit, that will definitely be able to help him. That could make the difference between him being a lower-round draft pick and him moving up into the middle rounds.

As noted in a report from Parker Gabriel of the Lincoln Journal Star, Mills thinks his speed is a little bit unproven. I can certainly see why he thinks that, considering his niche is that of a bruising running back.  He wants to show that he is a multifaceted player.

"“I’m not even going to lie, that is my main focus right now is just making sure I run this 40(-yard dash) well,” he said. “Every other drill, I could really care less for. I just want to show the scouts that I got faster.“That’s really my main concern. They know I can block, they know I’m strong, they know I’m physical. So they just want to see if I got faster.”"

Pro days are certainly big for what I like to call fringe players. Right now, Mills is one of those players. The running back position is very important in the game of football right now. Put in the right situation, Mills could be successful.

Right now, Mills has to focus on improving his speed. Working on that alone could be huge for his stock and the outcome of his professional career.
