Nebraska Basketball: Fatts Russell could thrive in Husker offense
Russell would fit well with Nebraska basketball.
It is no secret that Nebraska basketball has traditionally loved the transfer portal over the past couple of years. So far, it looks like they are doing their homework for next season already in that area. Earlier this week, they reached out to Rhode Island transfer Fatts Russell per a report from Sam McKewon of the Omaha World-Herald.
Russell would come to Lincoln with a ton of talent. he averaged 14.7 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game for the Rams this season. Measuring in at five-foot-10, 165 pounds, he is on the smaller side for a guard. Nevertheless, he would definitely bring scoring ability for Nebraska basketball.

Looking down his stat sheet, there weren’t too many games where he was held to single digits. It seemed like he was always involved in the play. Take his game against Duquesne on February 27 in the final game of the regular season and 36 minutes of play, he scored 27 points. Although he only went eight-of-21 from the field, he went 10-of-15 from the line, those are certainly solid numbers.
Scoring is not the only thing he does well. He can be involved in many areas of play over the course of the game. Take his game against George Washington on February 21 as an example. He scored 14 points, but also had nine rebounds and 10 assists. In that contest, it seemed like he was a magnet to the basketball.
He would certainly be an intriguing target for Nebraska basketball. Particularly in the type of fast offense that the Huskers run, he could excel. He can create contact, and it’s obvious that he can put the ball in the hoop.
Especially given the fact that Nebraska basketball relies on its point guards to do a lot in the offense, getting the ball in his hands often could benefit him. I could see him really excelling and playing to his strengths. It remains to be seen what Nebraska basketball will actually do in the transfer portal. Even still, Russell would certainly be a good fit.
Don’t let the fact that he is from a smaller school cloud your thoughts in terms of what he can do. He would definitely be able to help Nebraska basketball, and he would give the program yet another scorer. In a day and age where basketball is becoming less about position, Russell could find a home in Lincoln.
