Nebraska basketball has something special brewing.

It is safe to say that Nebraska basketball is in good hands for the future. Late Friday, signee Bryce McGowens was named the Maxpreps South Carolina Basketball Player of the Year.

He certainly deserves these accolades. He averaged 21.6 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game for Legacy Early College in South Carolina. He also turned it on when it mattered most, scoring 20.9 points per game in the St. James NIBC invitational. He played in a total of seven contests.

We know what he can do, and know that he is a very prolific scorer. He totaled 2,300 points for Wren High School. That is certainly impressive, particularly when you think about how low-scoring some of these high school games are.

He has the play style to be a go-to scorer. Nebraska basketball certainly has quite a few of those already, but it never hurts to add another. These days, you almost need three or four players that can put the ball in the basket with ease. He can certainly do that.

The thought of him being added to a potent Nebraska basketball lineup is certainly appealing. I think he will fit very well in Fred Hoiberg’s offense and I also think that he will be able to handle the up-tempo style that Nebraska wants to bring to the table.

Truthfully, I just hope he stays committed to the program  for the next year. That is not a knock on him, he is a very talented player. Other programs will certainly be knocking on his proverbial door. If he is able to come to Lincoln, I truly believe that he will be able to do big things. We have already seen him play at a high level on the high school circuit, now it’s time to see what he can do against Big Ten competition.

McGowens is the future of Nebraska basketball. Hopefully, he can usher in a new era of success.
