Nebraska basketball is among the mix for a talented point guard.

As the Nebraska basketball season comes to a close and recruiting begins, the Huskers are in the market for a graduate transfer from Vermont. Point guard Stef Smith has Nebraska listed as one of his options as he looks to come out of the transfer portal.

In addition to Nebraska, Providence, Arkansas, Georgia, Marquette, Santa Clara, St. Mary’s, and UConn are among some of the schools that have expressed interest in him.

More from Husker Corner

Smith recorded 13.6 points in 14 games for Vermont this season.  He established a career-high in minutes, recording 29.8 per game.

His best season came in 2019-20 as he scored 14.2 points per contest in 33 games played. He also tallied 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game that year. He proved to be efficient, shooting 42.3% from beyond the arc.

He would certainly bring a scoring element to the Nebraska basketball program. With the talent coming in next year, combined with the talent that Nebraska basketball already has, he would be a great addition. Especially coming off a season where he recorded some of his best numbers, his stock has never been higher. Now is the time to see what he can do while he is on a bit of a personal hot streak numerically.

He spoke to 247Sports earlier in the week about what he likes best about Nebraska. In particular, his connection with a certain player in the Nebraska basketball program could prove to be valuable as the Huskers try to get another key piece for the future.

"“I’ve been doing a lot of research on them and I know a player that’s at the school right now Dalano Banton. I was able to catch some of their games this past season and they’re obviously a really good program with a great coach who was in the league not too long ago as a coach. Another point when considering them would be to come play in the Big-10 and prove to myself that I can play at that level.”"

I like the fact that he wants to come in and try to prove himself.  I also like the fact that  he thinks highly of Coach Hoiberg. That tells me that he will buy into the Nebraska basketball system. It’s not that the players currently on the roster haven’t done that. In fact, we have seen tremendous growth in that area. However, it speaks to the fact that he will be on the same page with everybody should he choose to come to Lincoln.

I’m hoping that Nebraska basketball is able to land him. He would certainly be an asset, and  a player that Nebraska would be able to plug in right away. Even with a difficult season record-wise this year, you can definitely tell that the coaching staff is trying to build something special.
