Nebraska Baseball has great opening weekend against Purdue
Nebraska baseball had a great weekend.
It’s safe to say that Nebraska baseball had a very good weekend. They ended up going 3-1 on the weekend, and had a nice rebound in comparison to their first game on Friday.
Saturday was a bit tricky, as they had to play a doubleheader. They ended up winning both of those games, and then they took the finale of the series on Sunday. Winning 7-2, 10-0 and 4-0, it is becoming apparent that the pitching is beginning to stabilize itself. This was something I was worried about at the conclusion of Friday’s game. Nevertheless, they rebounded very nicely.

I have to say, the performance in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday was perhaps the most impressive bunch of individual performances of the entire weekend. Shay Schanaman had a great game on the mound, pitching six innings, allowing a hit, walking three batters, and striking out five batters. Caleb Feekin pitched well out of the bullpen, allowing one hit and striking out two in one inning of work.
Sunday, Nebraska baseball really emptied out their bullpen which made sense. They do not have to play another game until Friday against Ohio State. Why not allow the relievers to get some extra work in? Nebraska used seven pitchers on Sunday, with Jake Bunz starting the game. He pitched three innings, allowing one hit and striking out five. Max Schreiber received the win on Sunday, improving his record to 1-1 on the season, after taking the difficult loss on Friday afternoon.
Sunday’s game really showed the potential of the entire pitching staff. The group threw 158 pitches in total. They allowed seven hits, zero runs, and struck out 13 batters. I have not seen that type of firepower from the Nebraska baseball pitching staff in quite a while.
In terms of offensive performances on the weekend, Max Anderson and Joe Acker shone brightly. Anderson recorded eight hits, a home run, and five runs batted in. Acker had six hits, a home run and four runs batted in. Those two provided the offensive firepower for Nebraska baseball. It was great to see those two carry the load, as they showed that they could be depended on throughout multiple games.
All things considered, this was a really great weekend for Nebraska baseball. After the stinging loss on Friday, they came back and won the next three games in style. This puts them in a good position for may have to take on Ohio State on Friday. You want to be able to win the winnable, early games before the rest of the schedule heats up. Nebraska baseball certainly did that.
