The Nebraska baseball bullpen will start a man down.
As Nebraska baseball begins their season this weekend, they will be a little bit shorthanded. Colby Gomes will miss the 2021 season as a result of an injury suffered during rehabilitation from another injury. With this news, Nebraska baseball automatically starts with a weakened bullpen.
He had a 0-1 record with a 6.89 ERA in 15.2 innings pitched. In what was a shortened season, he tied for the second-most and innings pitched on the team.

He had a much more productive 2019 season, as he recorded 13 saves that year. He was certainly a source of stability for the Nebraska baseball bullpen that year.
Gomes also had a productive summer in 2020, as he recorded 14 strikeouts in 13 innings to go along with a 1.38 earned run average. He pitched in the Texas Collegiate League. He showed exactly how efficient he could be and what made him so special in 2019.
This is definitely a blow for Nebraska baseball in terms of experience. Gomes certainly had a lot of experience in key moments and in closing out ballgames. Personally, I am looking at the effect it will have on opening weekend. The starters will need to be able to go deep into the game, something that they did not do at times last season.
Nebraska baseball does have options in the bullpen. Spencer Schwellenbach and Cam Wynne are two of the more notable names out of the bullpen. They will certainly have to help carry the load in that regard. Hopefully, this does not become too taxing on their arms too early.
I’ll be interested to see how this Nebraska baseball team manages the bullpen with this news. They certainly have other options in terms of players they can put out there. However, losing a player with experience like Gomes is certainly a bit of a blow. Hopefully, his healing process can continue to go smoothly.
